Atelier T.A.O.

2023-10-07T08:40:16+00:00September 28th, 2023|

Julius Taminiau Architects is evolving into Atelier TAO.

T.A.O. stands for Taminiau Architecture Office.

Next to that, the word Tao, is multifaceted and can be somewhat challenging to encapsulate fully in words, as it represents a fundamental concept.

  1. The Way or Path: Tao is often translated as “The Way” or “The Path.” It represents the natural order or principle that governs the universe. It’s the underlying source of everything and the path to harmony and balance.
  2. Unnameable and Indescribable: Tao is often described as something that cannot be adequately defined or put into words. It transcends human understanding and language.
  3. Harmony and Balance: Tao represents the idea of living in harmony with the natural order of things. It’s about finding balance and not forcing things to happen but allowing them to unfold naturally.
  4. Spontaneity: Tao encourages spontaneity and going with the flow. It suggests that trying to control or manipulate things too much can lead to disharmony.
  5. Non-action (Wu Wei): Wu Wei is a Taoist concept closely related to Tao. It means “non-action” or “effortless action.” It’s about acting in a way that is in harmony with the Tao, without excessive effort or force.
  6. Simplicity: Taoism emphasizes simplicity and living in accordance with nature. It suggests that a simple and uncluttered life is more in line with the Tao.

Overall, Tao is a concept that encompasses a deep understanding of the natural world, the human experience, and the interconnectedness of all things. It’s a guiding principle for living a balanced and harmonious life, often sought through practices like meditation, mindfulness, and self-reflection.

Creation is fighting (Tadao Ando)

2022-06-23T11:48:24+00:00June 23rd, 2022|

Very often creation is “fighting”, often fighting bureaucracy and the institutions behind bureaucracy. So, you can understand that we’re very happy to have fought bureaucracy together with the City of Amsterdam as an ally. Our studio’s ambition – or we believe it’s our obligation – is to make sustainable architecture. In this day and age, we simply need to integrate sustainable elements (like solar panels) into our environments. At the same time, we have the responsibility to create connecting and inspiring environments, so it needs to be done properly. In the case of “Tom Thumb” (a tiny floating house), we wanted to integrate a roof filled with solar panels into the architecture. We were however very limited by the maximum allowed height. We tried to convince the council – to make a positive mind shift – and help us fight bureaucracy. The council was convinced (it wasn’t easy) by our design intention and helped us achieve our goal (or from a global perspective our mutual goal). We’ve got planning permission. The tiny houseboat is super small in its form but hopefully, it will be big in its symbolic value. Dancing, instead of fighting…

Thank you @architects.underground for having us and giving us the opportunity to dive in deeper into the relation between architecture and music, body and soul! I feel we’re getting closer to our final goal: creating a music pavilion with the legendary Dave Okumu!

Architects Underground: “Body and Soul will be our main act of the evening where Julius Taminiau will look at the relationship between music and architecture as he tells the story how he and music producer Dave Okumu (Jessie Ware, Amy Winehouse, Kwabs, Adele, Grace Jones, Tony Allen) created a new music recording space in SE London. We feel lucky to host Julius as his practice has been selected by Wallpaper as “one of the most promising practices of the world” !
